Is gay marriage going to be the big issue this election?

Obama finally just came out in support of it and is the first sitting president to do so. OK, so most people probably just assumed this was his stance on it anyway, but it's probably newsworthy as it's a huge issue right now.

What's more surprising to me, is the quote from Romney found in this article:

"And I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name." Now, mostly due to posturing I suppose, I've never heard a candidate come out and say this. Thoughts?

THE WAY HE DELIVERED THAT QUIP ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE FELL KIND OF SHORT TO ME.

WILL NOT VOTE.

I don't get why people seriously care. It never even crosses my mind that two people getting married is negative its nice that they found someone and hopefully they worked everything out in their lives before doing so, so they have the best chances.

But lol people.

I agree, but nevertheless people do care. A lot. The whole "my only problem is with calling it marriage" thing to me is completely stupid, but for Romney to come right out and say that he doesn't even think they should get the same benefits as anyone else is even more absurd.

What is more absurd is that anyone, anywhere, ever, has taken a Mormon seriously. I mean... seriously? They believe in the most absolutely ridiculous pile of shit I've ever heard of. Christianity is full of a lot of unbelievable BS but Mormonism is in such a different stratosphere that I feel like you HAVE to be mentally ill to believe it's reality.

I don't know...does crazy work that way? I think it as more of a line you've crossed and to fully believe either religion and take it literally is to cross into crazy.

Christianity can at least hide behind the fact that it was created so long ago that it can be hard to refute it either way... but Mormonism? The guy that claimed he had magic stones that let him see things but they never actually worked when people paid him to use them so he was charged with fraud and then claims he found magic golden plates that God brought him but no one can see them ever and oh by the way God can speak to me and make me change my mind about anything ever and make random new decrees like I should be allowed to tell 14 year old girls that they must marry me (a lot of them, I need over 40 wives) otherwise they will be banned to hell for all eternity because that isn't fucked up wow fuck everything why do people believe this shit FUCK
I fucking hate people, why would anyone want to get married ever?

The reason why I am getting married is quite simple:
1. I love Lauren
2. I am having a child with her
3. Living gets cheaper and her quality of life goes up. She'll have a baby from "some guy" until we get married. I don't want her to have to deal with the bullshit that people spew out of their mouths because of some odd belief they have that you have to be married to have a child together and have a family. But hey, my insurance goes way down and my taxes go way down, so fuck yea.

Don't worry Morgan, you'll find someone who makes you forget about all the rational reasons against marriage, and you'll want to do anything to make them happy. Honestly, that will most likely be marriage. Lauren and I aren't even rushing into it and are heavily considering a destination wedding, because then we get a fucking trip out of it.

I don't get it at all. Everyone should be for gays being allowed to be married. Anyone who says otherwise is a hate filled backwoods moron. You cannot let religion influence a LAW for a COUNTRY. I fucking hate this country and how it has become based upon some stupid religion that some geniuses thought up to scare the morons of the world scared to act like morons because of an eternal hell existing.

Lets just say this, anyone who is against the rights of any person to marry is doing so based on hate.

I don't see why people can't just live by a very simple rule:

Don't hurt yourself, and don't do things that hurt others.

People really don't understand how powerful and invisible wall is and how powerful a few lines of text are on a piece paper unless they're directly affected by it.

I think this is mainly a political move by Obama.

By saying he supports gay marriage, he forces Romney to talk about it, and thus gives him less time to sling mud at Obama. It also pushes Romney further right, or at least further right in the eyes of the electorate, and in turn makes Obama seem more moderate. It also mobilizes a large voter base, although it does so for both sides and I don't know which side will benefit more from it.

And from the comments section of Fries' link: "where is the medical inforamtion, CDC to world scintific org medical data, they all say NO, our media to government dosn't want to tell you that. where i obama surgeon general they have her locked in a closet, because she would say no"

--
I agree it's a political move, but nonetheless nice to finally hear a (sitting) president say they support it. And, like you said, I wasn't really sure who it would end up helping more when they first said it. This "issue" (sad that a question of civil rights is still seen as a political issue) pretty much has the country split 50/50 from what I've seen.

Also, Clint is the man.

SAYING YOU SUPPORT AND THEN ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS, ESPECIALLY FROM A POLITICIAN...MUCH LESS THE TYPE OF POLITICIAN THAT RUNS EVERY CAMPAIGN OFF OF "HOPE" AND "CHANGE" AND "IM A NIGGER, VOTE FOR ME"

--
Obama also supports the Dream Act, and last time it narrowly didn't pass. Like 3 votes off in the Senate. Which is funny to me. That its called an unpopular measure. Since 3 votes off isn't exactly something being unpopular. And I agree with Alex he's right, if he truly supported either measures he has many tools at his disposal to make them happen faster, but I will also add that changing people's minds so they don't freak out over stuff like this take decades.

I mean a while ago you would have been beat to death if you said you were gay, we have come a long way.

Not only that, I blame Christianity for all of this. In the times of Rome most people had bisexual relationships. Society kind of defines these things so hard for us we have no idea. Of course the realization that society defines everything around you including yourself and your daily actions is just the first step to realizing that everyone lies.

Especially politicians.

So this year: Cthulu 2012. Why chose a lesser evil?

My solid belief is that we have 0 control over the government and that the Illuminati run this mother hard.

Obama just pisses off conservatives and thats far more entertaining than anything else.

EVERYONE PISSES OFF CONSERVATIVES, I WOULD APPRECIATE IF THE COUNTRY WASN'T BEING RUN INTO THE GROUND IN THE PROCESS SINCE IT IS REALLY NOT A HARD THING TO DO.
